The Invisalign Lifestyle: How to Seamlessly Incorporate Clear Aligners Into Your Daily Routine

The Invisalign Lifestyle

Life with Invisalign doesn’t mean you have to give up the everyday activities you love. Whether working out, dining out, socializing, or engaging in sports, incorporating Invisalign treatment into your daily routine can be smooth and hassle-free. Here, your Surrey/Langley Diamond Invisalign provider, Aura Orthodontics, offers some practical tips to help you make a smooth transition into Invisalign treatment.

Working Out with Invisalign

If staying active is essential to your daily routine, you can rest assured that Invisalign treatment shouldn’t get in the way. How do you make it work?

  • Hydrate: Can you drink with Invisalign? The answer is yes! But stick to water when you have your clear aligners in. If you need electrolyte drinks when working out, take out your Invisalign first. Any beverage other than water can stain your aligners or cause bacteria buildup.
  • Post-workout cleaning: After working out, take the opportunity to remove your aligners and give them and your mouth a quick rinse with water before putting your aligners back in.

Dining Out with Invisalign

Love eating out? Thankfully, you don’t have to give it up in your life with Invisalign. Here are some tips:

  • Remove your clear aligners before you eat or drink anything other than water: This prevents food particles from getting trapped between your teeth and aligners and plaque from building up on the aligners.
  • Carry your storage case: When you eat out, keep your Invisalign case with you to store your aligners safely and hygienically.
  • Rinse and brush afterwards: After eating or drinking with Invisalign, rinse your mouth and aligners with water before putting them back in. Brushing your teeth is ideal, too, but if you can’t, we recommend a thorough rinse with water.

Social Interactions

Meeting friends? Attending events? Invisalign doesn’t need to interfere with your social life. Consider these things as you’re out and about:

  • Clean on the go: Keep a small dental kit with your Invisalign storage case, travel toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. This makes cleaning and keeping track of your Invisalign easy when you’re not at home.
  • Speech adjustment: At the start of the Invisalign process, you might notice a slight lisp as you get used to the aligners on your teeth. To help you get back to speaking clearly, Dr. Sharma, Dr. Lin, and Dr. Koo suggest talking as much as you usually do to get used to them faster. Most of our patients adjust within a few days.

Playing Sports with Invisalign

The great news is that Invisalign treatment doesn’t hinder participation in sports. When playing sports with Invisalign, just keep the following in mind:

  • Safety first with mouthguards:Remove your aligners and wear a protective mouthguard for contact sports. And be sure to store your aligners in a hard case to ensure they keep their shape and don’t get damaged or lost amongst your gear.
Pro tip: go for a custom mouthguard so it fits well. You might need to get a few throughout Invisalign treatment as your teeth shift into their final spots.
  • Non-contact sports: Running, yoga, cycling, or swimming with Invisalign? You can keep them in without any issues.
  • Hydration: Again, stick to water during sports to avoid staining or plaque buildup on your aligners.

Cleaning and Caring for Invisalign

Don’t worry — caring for and cleaning your Invisalign isn’t a monumental task. It’s a simple daily routine, just like brushing and flossing. Follow these easy steps for how to clean your Invisalign effectively every day:

  • Daily cleaning: Brush, then rinse your aligners every morning and night with a soft toothbrush and water.
  • Soak regularly: Use Invisalign cleaning crystals or an ultrasonic cleaner to deep clean your aligners daily.
  • Avoid hot water: Use lukewarm water when cleaning your clear aligners, not hot water. Really hot water can change the shape of your clear aligners.
